Updates From Rush University – Med Psych program

Virginia Carroll, M.D., PGY-5 and chief resident in the combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry residency program at Rush, recently presented a conference entitled “Prevention of Delirium” for the Division of Geriatric Medicine’s monthly grand rounds. She also received a grant from the American Psychosomatic Society to start a psychosomatics interest at group at Rush and attended their annual meeting held in March 2010 in Portland, Oregon.

Charles Hebert, M.D., PGY-5 and chief resident and Melanie McKean, D.O, PhD, PGY-4 in the combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry residency program at Rush, recently co-authored a review article on depression and osteoporosis. Bezalel Dantz, M.D., assistant professor of internal medicine and psychiatry, was a faculty co-author, as well. The review will appear in Current Psychiatry in April 2010.

Stephanie Cavanaugh, M.D., director of the consultation/liaison service at Rush University and Jeffrey Rado, M.D., assistant professor of internal medicine and psychiatry at Rush University, are collaborating on a randomized controlled trial investigating the use of metformin to prevent weight gain and metabolic consequences from olanzapine.

Steve Paschos, M.D., PGY-4 in the combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry residency program at Rush, recently presented a talk entitled “Immigrants and Mental Health” as part of the monthly med/psych conference series at Rush University.

The Rush University Combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry residency recently held its annual Med/Psych retreat at the beginning of March 2010. Topics included business models for integrated med/psych clinics featuring David Resch, M.D. as guest speaker. Dr. Resch is associate professor of medicine and psychiatry at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The afternoon also included informative discussions about evidence-based psychosocial treatments for cancer and functional gastrointestinal disorders.
